What it means
Your device has no working route to the address you are trying to open. It often happens when opening a local address, such as a router or printer page, from the wrong network, or when a VPN, proxy or network setting sends traffic the wrong way.
Common causes
- Trying to open a local IP address (like a router page) from a different network
- A wrong or old IP address for the device
- A VPN routing your traffic elsewhere
- A proxy setting that is not working
- Temporary router or network problems
- Stale network settings on your device
How to fix it
Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.
FIX 01Check the address and your networkEASY
- Make sure the address is typed correctly.
- If it is a local address such as
192.168.x.xor10.x.x.x, connect to the same Wi-Fi as that device. These addresses do not work from mobile data or another network. - Check your router's label or manual for its correct address.
Why it helps: Local addresses can only be reached from inside the same network.
FIX 02Find your router's real addressEASY
- Windows 11: search for
cmd, openCommand Prompt, typeipconfigand read theDefault Gatewayline for your connection. - Mac: open
System Settings > Network, select your connection, chooseDetails > TCP/IP, and readRouter. - Type that address into the browser.
Why it helps: The router address may not be the one you were trying.
FIX 03Turn off VPN and proxyEASY
- Disconnect any VPN.
- Windows 11:
Settings > Network & internet > Proxy, turn off manual proxy settings you did not add. - Mac:
System Settings > Network, select your connection,Details > Proxies, turn off unknown proxies.
Why it helps: VPNs and proxies can send local or blocked traffic down the wrong path.
FIX 04Restart router and deviceEASY
- Unplug the router for 30 seconds and plug it back in.
- Restart your computer or phone, reconnect to Wi-Fi and try again.
Why it helps: Refreshes routes and network addresses.
FIX 05Clear browser data and test in IncognitoEASY
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Delete(Windows) orCmd + Shift + Delete(Mac), chooseAll time, tick cookies and cached files, and delete. - Try the page in an Incognito window with
Ctrl + Shift + N(Windows) orCmd + Shift + N(Mac).
Why it helps: Rules out stale data and extensions.
FIX 06Renew your IP address on WindowsMEDIUM
- Run
Command Promptas administrator. - Run
ipconfig /release, thenipconfig /renew, thenipconfig /flushdns. - Try the address again.
Why it helps: Gets a fresh address and route from your router.
FIX 07Reset Windows network settingsADVANCED
- Warning: this removes network adapters and their settings; you may need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords and reinstall VPN software.
- Open
Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. - Select
Reset now, confirm, and let the PC restart.
Why it helps: Fixes broken network configuration that blocks routes.
Check it's fixed
- The page or router login opens.
- Other sites load normally.
- The address works from another device on the same network.
When to get help
If you cannot reach your router from any device on its own network, the router may need a reset or replacement; contact your provider. On a work network, ask IT.
Questions
Why can't I open my router page from my phone's data?
Router addresses like 192.168.1.1 only exist inside your home network. Connect to your Wi-Fi first.
Is ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE a website problem?
Usually not. It normally points to a route or network problem between you and the address.
Can a VPN cause it?
Yes. Some VPNs block local network access or send all traffic through their servers. Disconnect it or allow local network access in its settings.
