Quick fix
Check Apple's System Status page for iCloud Mail, then sign in at iCloud.com to see if your mail arrives there. If it does, make sure iCloud Mail is turned on in Settings, tap your name, then iCloud > Mail, check your iCloud storage isn't full, and restart the device.
What it means
iCloud Mail stops working for a few common reasons: Apple's service is having a problem, iCloud Mail is switched off on the device, your iCloud storage is full, or the device isn't set to fetch new mail. Checking your mail at iCloud.com tells you whether the problem is your account or just one iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Common causes
- An iCloud Mail outage shown on Apple's System Status page
- iCloud Mail is turned off on the device
- Your iCloud storage or mailbox is full
- Push or Fetch settings stop new mail arriving
- A VPN or network blocking the connection
- On a Mac, the wrong outgoing mail account is selected
- A third-party mail app is missing an app-specific password
How to fix it
Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.
01Check Apple's System Status for iCloud MailEasy
- Open Apple's System Status page in a web browser.
- Find
iCloud Mailin the list and see whether a problem is reported. - If there is an issue, wait and try again later.
Why it helps: Apple lists iCloud Mail outages on its official status page, so you can rule out a problem on Apple's side first.
02Check your connection, update and restartEasy
- Open any website to confirm you are online.
- If you use a VPN, turn it off and try iCloud Mail again.
- Install any software update: on iPhone or iPad go to
Settings > General > Software Update; on a Mac chooseApple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. - Turn the iPhone, iPad or Mac off and back on.
- If iCloud Mail works on another network but not yours, ask your internet provider or network administrator, since some networks block certain services.
Why it helps: Connection problems, VPNs and out-of-date software are common reasons iCloud Mail can't check for or send mail.
03Check whether mail arrives at iCloud.comEasy
- On a computer or another device, sign in at iCloud.com and open Mail.
- If new mail appears there, your account works and the problem is on your device.
- If mail is missing there too, check the
Junkmailbox and your iCloud storage. - If iCloud.com itself won't load, update your browser and clear its cache (see the browser fix below).
Why it helps: This separates an account problem from a problem with one device's settings.
04Make sure iCloud Mail is turned onEasy
- iPhone or iPad: open
Settings, tap your name, theniCloud. - Tap
Mailand turn onUse on this iPhone(orUse on this iPad). - Mac: open Mail, choose
Mail > Settings, and clickAccounts. - Select your iCloud account and check under
Account Informationthat it is enabled and its status shows online.
Why it helps: If iCloud Mail is switched off on the device, no mail is sent or received there.
05Check iCloud storage and mailbox limitsEasy
- iPhone or iPad: open
Settings, tap your name, theniCloudto see how much storage is used. - If it's full, free up space by deleting old backups, photos or large emails, or choose a bigger plan.
- For large attachments, use Mail Drop, compress the file, or use AirDrop if the person is nearby, so you stay within sending limits.
Why it helps: When iCloud storage or mailbox limits are reached, iCloud Mail can't send or receive messages.
06If new mail doesn't arrive on iPhone, check Push and FetchEasy
- Go to
Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accountsand tapFetch New Data. - Turn on
Push. - Make sure
Fetchis set toAutomatically. Only one account can use Push at a time, so if you have several accounts, tap your iCloud account and choosePushfor it. - Send yourself a test email to check it arrives, then restart the device.
- Check alerts in
Settings > Notifications > Mailif mail arrives but you don't get notified.
Why it helps: Push delivers iCloud mail as soon as it arrives; without it the device checks only on a schedule.
07If iCloud.com Mail won't load in your browser, clear the cacheEasy
- Update your browser to the latest version.
- Safari on Mac: choose
Safari > Settings > Advanced, selectShow features for web developers, close Settings, then chooseDevelop > Empty Caches. - Safari on iPhone or iPad: go to
Settings > Apps > Safari, tapClear History and Website Data, choose the time range and tapClear History. - Other browsers: use the browser's own option to clear cached files, then reload iCloud.com.
Why it helps: Old saved files in the browser can stop the iCloud.com Mail page loading properly.
08If you get a "could not be sent" alert on a Mac, fix the outgoing accountMedium
- In Mail, choose
Mail > Settingsand clickAccounts. - Select your iCloud account and click
Server Settings. - Set
Outgoing Mail Accountto iCloud. Don't chooseEdit SMTP Server List, which hides the iCloud option. - Check the
Outboxand send again. - If you can receive but never send, ask your internet provider whether it blocks outgoing mail (SMTP) to services like iCloud.
Why it helps: Mail can't send iCloud messages through the wrong outgoing account, and some internet providers block outgoing mail.
09If iCloud Mail fails in Outlook or another app, use an app-specific passwordMedium
- Your Apple Account must have two-factor authentication turned on.
- Sign in to your Apple Account page and open
Sign-In and Security > App-Specific Passwords. - Create a new password, give it a name such as the app's name, and follow the prompts.
- Enter this password in the other mail app instead of your Apple Account password.
- If you changed or reset your Apple Account password, Apple cancels all app-specific passwords, so create a new one for each app.
Why it helps: Apps not made by Apple need an app-specific password to reach iCloud Mail.
10If it still fails on iPhone, switch iCloud Mail and Push off and onMedium
- Open
Settings, tap your name, theniCloud > Mail, and turn offUse on this iPhone. - Go to
Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Dataand turn offPush. - Restart the iPhone.
- Turn
Pushand iCloud Mail back on. Your mail is stored in iCloud and downloads again, which can take a few minutes.
Why it helps: Apple suggests this to reset the device's connection to iCloud Mail when other steps haven't worked.
Check it's fixed
- A test email you send to your iCloud address arrives on your device within a few minutes.
- Messages you send leave the Outbox and appear in Sent.
- Mail on your device matches what you see at iCloud.com.
When to get help
If Apple's System Status shows no problem and mail still fails at iCloud.com as well as on your devices, contact Apple Support through Apple's website or the Apple Support app. Never use a support number from an ad or a pop-up.
Questions
Is iCloud Mail down right now?
Check Apple's System Status page, which lists iCloud Mail. If it shows no issue, the problem is most likely your device, network or storage.
Why is iCloud Mail not receiving emails on my iPhone?
Make sure iCloud Mail is turned on, Push is on in Fetch New Data, and your iCloud storage isn't full. Then check whether the mail appears at iCloud.com.
Why does Outlook keep asking for my iCloud password?
Apps not made by Apple need an app-specific password, and changing your Apple Account password cancels the old ones. Create a new app-specific password and enter it in Outlook.
Will turning iCloud Mail off delete my emails?
Your iCloud mail is stored in iCloud, so it downloads again when you turn iCloud Mail back on. You can confirm it's there at iCloud.com first.
