Quick fix
Unplug the Roku's power cord for at least 10 seconds, then plug it back in. If the remote works, you can instead go to Settings > System > Power > System restart.
What it means
A Roku that freezes, won't respond, won't connect or won't load apps usually needs a restart, a better network connection or a software update. Roku's own fixes start with the remote batteries and a restart, which does not change your settings. A factory reset is the last resort because it unlinks your Roku account and removes your apps.
Common causes
- Dead or weak remote batteries
- The Roku software is frozen and needs a restart
- Wi-Fi has dropped or the signal is too weak
- Out-of-date Roku software
- A problem with one app rather than the Roku
- The TV is on the wrong HDMI input
How to fix it
Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.
01Check the remote firstEasy
- Replace the remote batteries with a fresh, matching pair, or recharge the remote if it is rechargeable.
- On a Roku TV, press one of the physical buttons on the TV's edge to see whether the TV responds.
- If the TV responds but the remote doesn't, the remote is the problem, not the Roku.
Why it helps: A dead remote can make a working Roku look frozen.
02Check the TV input and cablesEasy
- For a Roku player or stick, use the TV's
InputorSourcebutton to select the HDMI port it is plugged into. - Check that the HDMI and power cables are pushed in firmly at both ends.
- If you see no picture at all, see the TV no signal guide.
Why it helps: A black screen is often just the wrong input or a loose cable.
03Restart the Roku from the menuEasy
- Press
Homeon the remote. - Go to
Settings > System > Power > System restart. If there is noPoweroption, look forSystem restartunderSystem. - Wait for the Roku to come back to the home screen.
- A system restart does not change your settings.
Why it helps: A restart clears temporary glitches that cause freezing and slow menus.
04If the screen is frozen, unplug the RokuEasy
- Unplug the Roku's power cord from the device or the wall. The remote's power button is not enough.
- Wait at least 10 seconds.
- Plug it back in and wait for the home screen.
Why it helps: Cutting the power fully restarts a Roku that no longer responds to the remote.
05Check the network connectionEasy
- Press
Home, then go toSettings > Network > Check connection. - Wait for the test. A green check means each part works; a red X means the Roku can't reach your router.
- If you see a red X, go to
Settings > Network > Set up connectionand connect to your Wi-Fi again. - If the signal shows Fair or Poor, move the Roku and router closer, remove obstacles, or use a wired Ethernet connection if your Roku has a port.
- Roku suggests about 3 Mbps for standard definition, 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps or more for 4K.
Why it helps: A weak or dropped connection causes buffering and apps that won't load.
06Restart your modem and routerEasy
- Unplug the modem and router (or the single box from your internet provider).
- Wait about a minute, then plug the modem in first, then the router.
- Wait until the lights settle and the internet is back.
- Run
Check connectionon the Roku again.
Why it helps: Restarting the home network fixes most dropped connections.
07Update the Roku softwareEasy
- Press
Homeand go toSettings > System > Software update. - Select
Check Now. - If an update is found, the Roku downloads and installs it, then restarts. App updates are installed at the same time.
Why it helps: Updates fix bugs that cause freezing and app problems.
08If one app isn't working, remove it and add it backMediumResets settings
- Press
Home, highlight the app that isn't working and press theStarbutton. - Select
Remove appand confirm. - Restart the Roku, then add the app again from the Roku Streaming Store and sign in to it again.
- If
Remove appisn't offered, you may have a subscription billed through Roku. Skip this step rather than cancelling the subscription.
Why it helps: A fresh copy of the app replaces files that may be damaged.
09Factory reset the Roku as a last resortAdvancedBack up first
- Warning: a factory reset removes your preferences, custom settings and the link to your Roku account, which removes your apps. You will need your Roku account login, Wi-Fi password and app sign-ins to set it up again.
- From the menu: go to
Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset. On a Roku TV, chooseFactory reset everythingand follow the steps on screen. - Roku players: with the device on, hold the
Resetbutton for about 10 seconds until the status light blinks quickly. - Roku TVs: hold the reset button, or the button combination for your model, for about 12 seconds. The buttons differ by model; check Roku Support for yours.
- After the reset, complete the guided setup and link the device to your Roku account again.
Why it helps: A reset clears software problems that nothing else fixes.
Check it's fixed
- The Roku home screen loads and the remote responds quickly.
Settings > Network > Check connectionshows green checks.- Apps open and video plays without freezing or buffering.
When to get help
If the Roku still freezes or won't turn on after a factory reset, contact Roku through Roku Support, or the TV maker for a Roku TV. Only use contact options from Roku's own website, as many sites list fake Roku support numbers.
Questions
How do I restart a frozen Roku?
Unplug the Roku's power cord for at least 10 seconds, then plug it back in. If the remote still works, use Settings > System > Power > System restart instead.
Will restarting my Roku delete anything?
No. A system restart or unplugging the power doesn't change your settings or remove apps. Only a factory reset erases them.
Why does my Roku keep buffering?
Usually the Wi-Fi signal is weak or the internet is too slow. Run Check connection in Settings > Network; Roku suggests about 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps or more for 4K.
What if only one app doesn't work on my Roku?
Restart the Roku and check for a software update, then remove the app and add it back. If it still fails, check that service's own help page.
