Quick fix
Quit SteamVR, check every headset connection (power, USB, DisplayPort or HDMI, and the breakaway or link box cable), unplug the headset's power for a few seconds to power-cycle it, then plug back in and restart SteamVR.
What it means
SteamVR shows "Headset not Detected" (often Error 108) when it cannot find the headset over USB. Valve says this is usually a loose cable, a USB port or driver problem, or a headset that needs a power-cycle; a related error, 208, means the headset was found over USB but its display was not.
Common causes
- A loose cable at the headset, breakaway connector, link box or PC
- No power to the headset or link box
- A USB port or USB driver that is not working with the headset
- The video cable plugged into the motherboard instead of the graphics card
- Outdated graphics drivers
- A stuck headset or SteamVR state that needs a restart
- Damaged SteamVR files or a conflicting add-on
How to fix it
Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.
01Check every cable and the powerEasy
- Quit SteamVR first.
- Valve Index: check the power outlet, USB, DisplayPort, PC end and the breakaway connector. Push the tether fully into the headset; it can look connected when it is not.
- HTC Vive: check that the three orange-tipped headset cables are in the orange ports of the link box, that the link box has power, and that the link box is facing the right way.
- Look at the headset lights. On a Valve Index, no lights means no power, so try a different wall outlet.
- Start SteamVR again and check whether the headset turns solid green in the status window.
Why it helps: Valve lists loose connections as the first thing to check for this message.
02Power-cycle the headsetEasy
- Quit SteamVR.
- Valve Index: unplug and replug the breakaway connector. HTC Vive: unplug the link box from the PC and from power.
- Wait a few seconds, then reconnect everything and let Windows finish installing any drivers.
- Start SteamVR. Valve notes you may need to repeat this a couple of times.
Why it helps: Cutting power resets a headset stuck in standby or an error state.
03Restart the headset and SteamVREasy
- In the SteamVR status window, open the menu and select
Devices > Restart headset. - If that does not help, close SteamVR completely and open it again.
- Then restart Windows from
Start > Power > Restart.
Why it helps: SteamVR recovers from many temporary errors after a restart.
04Try a different USB portEasy
- Quit SteamVR and move the headset's USB cable (or the link box USB cable) to a different USB port on the PC. You can also try the same port again after a power-cycle.
- HTC Vive: Valve has seen problems with some USB 3.0 ports, so try a USB 2.0 port if issues continue.
- Start SteamVR and wait for any drivers to finish installing.
Why it helps: Some USB ports and controllers do not work reliably with VR headsets.
05Plug the video cable into the graphics cardEasy
- Find the graphics card ports on the back of the PC; they are usually lower down and run sideways.
- Plug the headset's DisplayPort cable (Index) or the link box HDMI cable (Vive) into one of those ports, not the motherboard video ports.
- If you have more than one free port on the graphics card, try another one.
Why it helps: The headset needs the graphics card's output; this mostly fixes display errors such as 208 or Headset Display Disconnected.
06Update graphics drivers and check SteamVR filesMedium
- Install the latest graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, including the audio part of the driver.
- In Steam, go to
Library, typeSteamVRin the search box, right-click SteamVR and selectProperties. - Open the
Installed Filestab (calledLocal Filesin older Steam versions) and select the verify integrity button. - Restart Windows and try again.
Why it helps: Valve lists driver updates and verifying SteamVR files among the steps that solve most problems.
07Remove all SteamVR USB devices and reconnectMedium
- Unplug the headset's USB cable from the PC.
- In the SteamVR status window, open the menu and select
Developer > Developer Settings. - Select
Remove All SteamVR USB Devicesand wait for it to finish. - Plug the headset back into a USB port and let Windows reinstall the drivers, then test again.
Why it helps: Valve recommends this when a headset stays in standby, because it forces fresh USB drivers to install.
08Try SteamVR safe modeAdvanced
- Close SteamVR.
- Type
runin the Windows search bar and openRun. - Type
vrmonitor://safemode/enableand press Enter, then start SteamVR. - If the headset is now detected, a third-party add-on or VR utility is likely interfering; remove recently added ones.
- You can leave safe mode from the message shown above the SteamVR status window.
Why it helps: Safe mode stops some third-party drivers from loading, which shows whether an add-on is the cause.
Check it's fixed
- The headset icon is solid green in the SteamVR status window.
- The headset display shows the SteamVR home or a game.
- The headset is still detected after you close and reopen SteamVR.
When to get help
If the headset is never detected on any USB port after all of this, or the Index lights stay red and blinking, contact Steam Support (Valve Index) or HTC Vive support, since a cable, link box or headset part may need replacing.
Questions
What does SteamVR Error 108 mean?
Valve describes Error 108 as "Headset not found" and says it may be a USB or driver problem. Power-cycling the headset and trying different USB ports usually helps.
What is SteamVR Error 208?
Valve says Error 208 means the headset was detected over USB but its display was not found. Check the video cable and power cord, make sure the link box is the right way round, and update your graphics driver.
What do the lights on my Valve Index headset mean?
Dull green means sleeping, blue means standby, steady red means the display did not start, blinking red means a startup error, and no light means no power. Blue usually responds to a power-cycle or a different USB port.
Does my headset need a USB 3.0 port?
Not for the original HTC Vive, which supports USB 2.0 or newer; Valve has even seen issues with some USB 3.0 ports. If one port fails, try another.
