Quick fix
Press the power button on the TV itself; if the TV turns on, the remote is the problem. If it doesn't, unplug the TV for 30 seconds, then plug it straight into a wall outlet you know works, without a surge protector.
What it means
A Samsung TV that won't turn on may really have no power, may be on with a black screen, or may just have a remote that has stopped working. The small red standby light on the front of the TV is the best clue: steady, off or blinking each point to a different cause.
Common causes
- The remote has dead batteries or has lost its connection
- The outlet, power strip or surge protector isn't supplying power
- The TV is on but showing a black screen because of the wrong source or a bad cable
- A loose or damaged One Connect cable on models that have a One Connect Box
- A fault inside the TV, often shown by a blinking red light
How to fix it
Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.
01Check the red standby lightEasy
- Look for the small red standby light on the TV.
- Light on and steady: the TV has power but is in standby. The remote may be the problem.
- Light off: the TV either has no power, or it is already on with a black screen.
- Light blinking: Samsung says this can point to a fault with the TV. Try the unplug and outlet fixes below before asking for service.
Why it helps: The light tells you whether to look at the remote, the power supply or the picture.
02Press the power button on the TV itselfEasy
- Find the power button or control stick on the TV. Its place varies by model; the user manual shows where.
- Press it once.
- If the TV turns on, the TV is fine and the remote needs attention (see the next fix).
- If the light was off, press any TV button other than power. If a menu or anything else appears, the TV is on and the problem is the picture (see the black screen fix).
Why it helps: This quickly shows whether the problem is the TV or only the remote.
03If the TV's buttons work but the remote doesn't, test and reset the remoteEasy
- Point the remote at a phone camera, hold
Power, and look at the phone screen for a colored light. No light means fresh batteries are needed, or the remote has failed. - Solar-powered remotes: let the remote charge for a while before testing.
- Reset a standard remote: take out the batteries, hold
Powerfor about 8 seconds, then put the batteries back. - Reset a 2021 or newer solar remote: hold
Return(Back) andEnter(the middle of the direction pad) for 10 seconds. - Pair a Smart Remote: point it at the TV from within about 1 foot and hold
ReturnandPlay/Pausetogether for at least 5 seconds, until a message says it is connected. If it won't pair, unplug the TV for 30 seconds and try again.
Why it helps: A remote with flat batteries or a lost pairing makes the TV look dead when it isn't.
04Unplug the TV for 30 secondsEasy
- Pull the TV's power plug out of the wall (and the One Connect Box plug, if your TV has one).
- Leave it unplugged for 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and press the power button on the remote or the TV.
Why it helps: Removing power for a short time lets the TV start fresh, which Samsung recommends whether the light is off or blinking.
05Plug the TV straight into a wall outlet you know worksEasy
- Test the outlet with something else, such as a lamp.
- Plug the TV straight into a working wall outlet, not a surge protector or power strip.
- If the red light now comes on and stays steady, the old outlet or surge protector was the problem.
- Samsung notes that surge protectors can wear out and stop supplying the power the TV needs.
Why it helps: A tripped or worn-out power strip is a common reason a TV gets no power.
06If you hear sound or see a menu but no picture, check the source and cablesEasy
- Press
Homeon the remote. If the menu shows, the TV is working and only the source is the problem. - Press
Sourceand pick the input your cable box or streaming device uses, such as HDMI 1. - Make sure that device is turned on. Turn it off and on again.
- Unplug each cable one at a time, at both ends, and plug it back in firmly. Replace any damaged cable.
- On models that have it, test the cable from
Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > Signal Information > HDMI Cable Testwhile on that HDMI input. - Try a different device or a different HDMI port to find which part is at fault.
Why it helps: A TV on the wrong source or with a bad cable shows a black screen even though it is on.
07If your TV has a One Connect Box, check the One Connect cableMedium
- Find the thin cable that runs from the TV to the One Connect Box (on some models called the Invisible Cable).
- Unplug it at both ends and plug it back in firmly.
- Look for bends, kinks, pinches or heavy objects on it. Replace the cable if it is damaged.
- Press
Homeon the remote to see if the menu now appears.
Why it helps: On these models all the power and picture signals travel through that one cable, so a loose or damaged cable can stop the TV working.
Check it's fixed
- The TV turns on with both the remote and its own power button.
- Turning the TV off and on again with the remote works every time.
- The TV shows a picture from your cable box or streaming device.
When to get help
If the red light keeps blinking, or never comes on in a working wall outlet, request service through Samsung's official support site. Never open the TV yourself.
Questions
Why is my Samsung TV's red light blinking but it won't turn on?
Samsung says a blinking light can point to a fault with the TV. Unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it into a wall outlet without a surge protector; if it still blinks, request service.
My Samsung TV's red light is on but it won't turn on. What does that mean?
The TV has power, so the remote is the most likely problem. Press the power button on the TV itself; if it turns on, change the batteries or reset and pair the remote.
Can a surge protector stop my TV turning on?
Yes. Samsung notes surge protectors can wear out and stop supplying enough power. Plug the TV straight into a wall outlet to test.
My Samsung TV has sound but no picture. Is it broken?
Not always. Press Home on the remote; if the menu appears, the TV works and the source, cable or connected device is the problem.
