Quick fix
Restart your TV or streaming device and your router, waiting 30 seconds before turning each back on. Then check your location in YouTube TV under your profile icon and Location, and make sure your internet gives at least 7 Mbps for HD.
What it means
When YouTube TV won't load, keeps buffering or won't play live channels, the cause is usually the device, the home internet, or YouTube TV's location check. YouTube TV must confirm where you are to show local channels, so a wrong home area or playback area can block programs. Slow internet is the most common reason for buffering.
Common causes
- A temporary glitch in the TV, streaming device or app
- Slow or unsteady home internet
- Wrong home area or current playback area
- Out-of-date app or device software
- Location permission turned off on a phone or computer
- Device-specific display settings, for example on some Roku setups
- A YouTube TV service problem
How to fix it
Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.
01Check whether YouTube TV is having a problemEasy
- Open another app on the same TV, such as Netflix or regular YouTube. If it also fails, the problem is your internet.
- Try YouTube TV on a phone or computer. If it works there, the problem is with the TV or streaming device.
- If YouTube TV fails everywhere, check YouTube TV Help or YouTube TV's official social media account for news of a problem.
Why it helps: It shows quickly whether to wait or to fix something at home.
02Restart your TV or streaming deviceEasy
- Hold the power button on the TV or streaming device to turn it off.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Turn it back on, open YouTube TV and try again.
Why it helps: A restart clears temporary glitches in the device and the app.
03Restart your routerEasy
- Unplug the router from power. If you have a separate modem, unplug it too.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and wait until the lights settle and the internet is back.
- Open YouTube TV and try again.
Why it helps: Restarting the router fixes many dropped or slow connections.
04Check your location settingsEasy
- In YouTube TV on the TV, select your profile icon, then
Location. - Check that
Home AreaandCurrent Playback Areaare correct. Your home area is the ZIP code where you live; it does not change when you travel. - To update the current playback area, go to
Location > Current Playback Areaon the TV. - Then, on a phone signed in to the same account, go to
tv.youtube.com/verifyand allow location access. - On a phone or computer, also make sure YouTube TV is allowed to use your location.
Why it helps: YouTube TV needs to confirm your location before it can play local and live channels.
05Check your internet speedEasy
- Run a speed test on a device on the same network.
- YouTube TV needs at least 3 Mbps for standard definition and 7 Mbps for one HD stream.
- For reliable HD while other devices are online, aim for 13 Mbps or more. 4K needs 25 Mbps or more.
- If your speed is low, pause downloads and other streams, move closer to the router, or contact your internet provider.
Why it helps: Below about 3 Mbps, YouTube TV will load slowly and stop to buffer.
06Update the YouTube TV app and your deviceEasy
- Install the latest system update for your TV or streaming device from its settings menu.
- Update the YouTube TV app from the device's app store.
- On a computer, update your browser. YouTube TV recommends Chrome.
- Restart the device and try again.
Why it helps: Updates fix known bugs that cause playback errors.
07If you watch on a phone or computer, reset the playerEasy
- Phone: close the YouTube TV app completely, then reopen it. You can also turn mobile data off and on.
- Phone: pull the player down to shrink it, swipe it to the right to close it, then reopen the program.
- Computer: close and reopen the browser, then restart the computer.
- To lower the picture quality, select
Settingsin the video player (the overflow menu on a phone), thenQuality, and choose a lower setting. - If YouTube TV asks to verify your device's identity with Google, select
Allow, or picture quality may be lower.
Why it helps: Reopening the player and lowering quality help on slower or busy connections.
08If you watch on a Roku, check the display settingsMediumResets settings
- If you see an HDCP error, turn on the
HDMI Ultra HD Colorsetting in your TV's own settings menu. - If playback is choppy, on the Roku go to
Settings > Display type. - Choose one of the settings YouTube TV Help lists:
4K 30 Hz TV,4K 60 Hz TVor4K HDR 60 Hz, then try again.
Why it helps: YouTube TV Help lists these Roku settings as fixes for HDCP errors and choppy video.
09Reinstall the YouTube TV appMediumResets settings
- Try this last. Reinstalling signs you out of YouTube TV on that device, so have your Google account email and password ready.
- Uninstall the YouTube TV app from your TV, streaming device or phone.
- Install it again from the device's app store.
- Sign in again and try playing a program.
- If other apps on the device have the same problem, contact the device maker.
Why it helps: A fresh install replaces app files that may be damaged.
Check it's fixed
- Live channels and recordings play without an error.
- The
Locationscreen shows the right home area and playback area. - Programs play for several minutes without buffering.
When to get help
If YouTube TV still fails after these steps, use the Contact us option in YouTube TV Help. If every app on the device fails, contact your internet provider or the device maker. Be wary of phone numbers found on random websites; use only the contact options in YouTube TV Help.
Questions
Why does YouTube TV keep asking for my location?
YouTube TV checks where you are so it can show the right local channels. Make sure your current playback area is correct and that the app is allowed to use your phone's location.
What internet speed does YouTube TV need?
At least 3 Mbps for standard definition, 7 Mbps for one HD stream and 13 Mbps or more for reliable HD with other devices in use. 4K needs 25 Mbps or more.
Why is YouTube TV behind the live broadcast?
Every live stream has a short broadcast delay, which gives the player a buffer. You can change it under the three-dot more menu, then Broadcast Delay: Default gives fewer interruptions, while Decrease brings it closer to live but may buffer more.
Is YouTube TV down or is it just me?
If other apps work and YouTube TV works on your phone, the problem is your TV or streaming device. If it fails everywhere, check YouTube TV Help or its official social media account.
