How to fix a Meta Quest black screen

8 fixes, easiest first3 min readUpdated November 2026

Quick fix

Charge the headset for a while, then force restart it by holding the power button for at least 30 seconds; if the screen is still black, hold power and volume down together until the boot screen appears and choose Boot device.

What it means

A black screen on a Meta Quest usually means the headset is asleep, out of battery, busy installing an update, or stuck after a software hiccup. If you can still hear sound, the headset is running and a restart normally brings the picture back. A true hardware fault is much less common.

Common causes

  • The headset is installing an update and needs more time
  • The headset went to sleep after you took it off
  • A flat battery or a charger that is too weak
  • A frozen system that needs a force restart
  • A software update that did not finish properly
  • A dirty or damaged USB-C charging port

How to fix it

Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.

01Wait for an update to finishEasy

  1. If the screen shows the Meta logo or a computer chip icon before going black, the headset may be installing an update.
  2. Leave it alone, plugged in, for up to 15 minutes before trying anything else.
  3. Do not hold the power button during this time.

Why it helps: Interrupting an update can cause more problems; often the screen comes back on its own once it finishes.

02Wake the headset and check nothing covers the insideEasy

  1. Press the power button once to wake the headset, then put it on.
  2. The headset has a sensor on the inside near where your face goes. Make sure nothing such as a cloth, lens cover or hair is blocking it.
  3. If the inside looks dirty, wipe it gently with a dry microfiber cloth.

Why it helps: A headset that is simply asleep can look like a black screen; waking it is the quickest thing to rule out.

03Charge the headset properlyEasy

  1. Plug the headset into a wall outlet using the power adapter and USB-C cable that came with it, not a PC or laptop port.
  2. Check the light on the side: orange means it is charging and green means it is fully charged. If no light comes on, try another outlet and check the cable.
  3. Leave it charging for a while before trying to turn it on. A full charge takes about 2 and a half hours with the included adapter.
  4. If you use another adapter, it needs to supply enough power: 18W for Quest 3 and 3S, 45W for Quest Pro and 10W for Quest 2.

Why it helps: A completely flat battery can look like a black screen, and a weak charger may not charge the headset at all.

04Force restart the headsetEasy

  1. If you can see anything, hold the power button until the Power off screen appears and select Restart.
  2. If the screen stays black, press and hold the power button for at least 30 seconds.
  3. Let go and wait 30 seconds.
  4. If the headset does not turn back on by itself, press the power button to turn it on.

Why it helps: A force restart clears a frozen system, which is the usual cause of a black screen with working audio.

05Hard reboot from the boot menuMedium

  1. Hold down the power and volume down buttons together for at least 10 seconds, or until the boot screen appears in the headset.
  2. Use the volume buttons to move to Boot device.
  3. Press the power button to select it and wait for the headset to start.
  4. If the boot screen does not appear, charge the headset and try again.

Why it helps: Starting from the boot menu restarts the system fully and can get past a startup that hangs on a black screen.

06Update the headset from the Meta Horizon appMedium

  1. Turn the headset on and make sure it is on the same Wi-Fi network as your phone.
  2. Open the Meta Horizon app (formerly the Meta Quest app) on your phone.
  3. Tap Menu at the top of your Horizon Feed, then tap Devices and select your headset.
  4. Tap Headset settings, then Software update (on some versions, Advanced settings > Software update).
  5. If an update is available, tap Update now and wait for it to finish.
  6. If the phone app cannot reach the headset, Meta also offers a software update tool on a computer that works even when the headset is unresponsive.

Why it helps: A fresh software update can repair a broken install without erasing your headset.

07Clean the USB-C charging portMedium

  1. Turn the headset off and unplug everything.
  2. Gently brush inside the USB-C port with a new, dry, soft toothbrush (no toothpaste), or give it 3 short bursts of compressed air while wearing safety glasses.
  3. Do not use liquids, alcohol, metal pins or toothpicks in the port.
  4. If the port was wet, let the headset dry for at least an hour before plugging it in.
  5. Plug the charger back in and watch for the charging light.

Why it helps: Lint or dirt in the port can stop the cable connecting, so the headset never charges.

08Factory reset the headset (last resort)AdvancedBack up first

  1. Warning: a factory reset erases all data, accounts and downloaded games from the headset. Purchases stay on your Meta account and can be downloaded again, but saves without cloud backup are lost.
  2. Charge the headset to at least 50% first.
  3. Turn the headset off, then hold the power and volume down (-) buttons together until the boot screen loads.
  4. Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory reset and press the power button.
  5. Highlight Yes and press the power button, then set the headset up again in the Meta Horizon app.

Why it helps: If the system is badly damaged, resetting it to factory settings is the last fix before a repair.

Check it's fixed

  • The headset shows the Meta logo and then your home environment when you put it on.
  • The screen comes back after you take the headset off for a minute and put it on again.
  • The headset restarts normally from the Power off screen.

When to get help

If there is no light at all with the original charger, or the boot screen never appears after charging, the headset may have a hardware fault. Contact Meta Store Support or check if your headset qualifies for a replacement.

Questions

Why is my Quest screen black but I can hear sound?

The headset is running but the display is not showing a picture, often because the system froze. A force restart by holding the power button for at least 30 seconds usually fixes it.

Why does my Quest go black when I take it off?

Usually that is normal. The headset has a sensor on the inside and goes to sleep when you take it off to save battery. Put it back on, or press the power button, to wake it.

My Quest went black after an update. What should I do?

Leave it plugged in for up to 15 minutes in case the update is still installing, then force restart it. If it is still black, use the boot menu and choose Boot device.

Is the screen only black when I use Link with my PC?

If the headset works normally on its own but goes black in Meta Horizon Link, the problem is the PC connection, not the headset. See the Quest Link guide.
