Quick fix
Put a fresh battery in the controller (or take it out for 30 seconds and put it back), make the room evenly lit without direct sunlight, then restart the headset. If it still fails, unpair and re-pair the controller in the Meta Horizon app.
What it means
Meta Quest headsets track the Touch controllers with the same cameras they use to see the room, and connect to them wirelessly. When a controller drifts, floats away or stops responding, the cause is usually a weak battery, poor lighting, dirty cameras or a lost pairing. Hand tracking can also take over and make it look as if the controllers are not working.
Common causes
- A flat, loose or old battery, or the plastic battery tab still in place
- Dim light, direct sunlight, mirrors or LED strips confusing tracking
- Dirty headset tracking cameras or a sleeve, cover or sticker on the controller
- Something blocking the cameras' view of the controller
- Hand tracking taking over from the controllers
- The controller has lost its pairing with the headset
- Out-of-date headset software or Meta Horizon app
How to fix it
Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.
01Replace or reseat the batteryEasy
- On a new controller, make sure the plastic tab inside the battery cover has been pulled out.
- If your controllers have removable batteries, take the battery out for at least 30 seconds, then put it back in firmly.
- If the controller still acts up, fit a fresh battery.
- Press a button and check the controller's light turns on.
Why it helps: A weak or loose battery is the most common reason a controller drifts, disconnects or stops responding.
02Fix the lighting and play areaEasy
- Make the room well lit so you can see clearly, but keep direct sunlight off the play area.
- Switch off small lights such as Christmas lights or LED strips.
- Cover or move away from mirrors, glass and polished surfaces.
- Never leave the headset where sunlight can reach the lenses, even indoors. Meta warns that less than a minute of direct sunlight can permanently damage the lenses and display.
Why it helps: The headset cameras track the controllers, so bad light or reflections make them jump, freeze or drift.
03Clean the headset cameras and remove accessoriesEasy
- Turn the headset off and wipe the tracking cameras on the outside of the headset with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Do not use alcohol, chemical cleaners or sprays.
- Take off any third-party sleeves, grips, covers or stickers from the controllers and test without them.
- Keep the controllers in front of you where the cameras can see them, with nothing blocking the view between the headset and the controllers.
Why it helps: Dirty cameras and unsupported accessories are known causes of controller tracking and pairing problems.
04Check whether hand tracking has taken overEasy
- If you see virtual hands instead of controllers, pick the controllers up and hold them in view of the headset.
- To use controllers only, press the Meta button to open the Navigator, then select
Quick controls > Settings. - Select
Hands & body. - Turn off the toggle next to
Hand and Body Tracking.
Why it helps: With hand tracking on, the headset can follow your hands instead of the controllers, which looks like the controllers stopped working.
05Restart the headsetEasy
- Press and hold the headset's power button until the
Power offscreen appears. - Select
Restart. If you cannot select anything, hold the power button for at least 30 seconds, wait 30 seconds, then press it again to turn the headset on. - Once it starts, press a button on each controller to wake it.
Why it helps: A restart reconnects the controllers and clears temporary tracking glitches.
06Update the headset and the Meta Horizon appEasy
- On the headset, open
Quick controls > Settings > General > Software updateand install any update. - On your phone, check the App Store or Google Play and update the Meta Horizon app (formerly the Meta Quest app).
- Keep the headset charged, turned on and connected to Wi-Fi so it can update automatically.
Why it helps: Software updates include fixes for controller connection and tracking bugs.
07Unpair and re-pair the controllerMedium
- Turn the headset on and unlock it. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone and make sure the phone and headset are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the Meta Horizon app, tap
Menuat the top of your Horizon Feed, then tapDevicesand select your headset. - Tap
Headset settings, thenControllers. Tap the problem controller, thenUnpair controller. - Tap
Pair new controllerand choose left or right. - Right controller: hold the Meta button and the B button. Left controller: hold the Menu button and the Y button. Keep holding until the light blinks and then stays lit.
Why it helps: Re-pairing creates a fresh connection, which fixes controllers that will not connect or whose buttons stop responding; pairing is only possible through the Meta Horizon app.
08Reset your view if the controllers feel misalignedEasy
- Point the right controller straight ahead.
- Press and hold the Meta button until the view resets.
- Or open
Quick controlsand selectReset view.
Why it helps: Recentering lines up the virtual world and your controllers with the direction you are facing.
09Factory reset the headset (last resort)AdvancedBack up first
- Warning: a factory reset erases all data and downloaded games from the headset. Purchases stay on your Meta account, but saves without cloud backup are lost.
- Take the batteries out of both controllers before you start.
- Charge the headset to at least 50%, turn it off, then hold the power and volume down (-) buttons until the boot screen appears.
- Use the volume buttons to choose
Factory reset, press power, then chooseYesand press power. - When the setup screen appears, put fresh batteries in the controllers and pair them when the setup asks.
Why it helps: If a controller still will not pair or track after every other fix, a reset clears pairing data, especially for a new or replacement controller.
Check it's fixed
- Both controllers appear in your hands in VR and follow your movements smoothly.
- Every button, trigger and thumbstick responds in the home menu.
- The controllers stay connected for a full play session without dropping out.
When to get help
If a controller's light shows nothing at all with a fresh battery, or it still will not pair after a factory reset, it may be faulty. Contact Meta Store Support to check warranty options.
Questions
Why is my Quest controller drifting?
Drifting usually comes from a weak battery, poor lighting, reflections or dirty headset cameras. Fit a fresh battery, improve the lighting and wipe the cameras with a dry microfiber cloth.
Can I pair Quest controllers without the phone app?
No. Meta says pairing Touch controllers requires the Meta Horizon app on your phone. During a fresh setup after a factory reset, the headset guides you through pairing.
Why does my Quest show my hands instead of the controllers?
Hand and Body Tracking is on and the headset is following your hands. Pick up the controllers, or turn the feature off in Settings under Hands & body.
Do third-party controller grips cause tracking problems?
They can. Meta warns that unsupported sleeves, covers and stickers may stop pairing or tracking from working, so test without them.
