How to fix a Meta Quest boundary that keeps resetting

8 fixes, easiest first3 min readUpdated November 2026

Quick fix

Turn on even, bright room lighting (avoid direct sunlight), wipe the outside cameras with a dry microfiber cloth, then redraw the boundary from the middle of the room while looking all around. If it still resets, clear the boundary history in Settings > Environment setup > Boundary and draw it fresh.

What it means

The Boundary (formerly Guardian) is the virtual wall that keeps you inside a safe play area. The headset remembers a boundary by recognizing your room through its cameras, so when the lighting, furniture or people in the room change, or the cameras cannot see clearly, it may treat the room as new and ask you to draw the boundary again.

Common causes

  • Lighting has changed since the boundary was drawn, such as daylight versus lamps at night
  • Furniture or wall decor was moved, so the room looks new to the headset
  • Too little light, or direct sunlight in the play area
  • Smudged or covered tracking cameras on the front of the headset
  • People or pets moving around inside the play area
  • The boundary was drawn while looking in only one direction
  • Old or corrupted saved boundaries on the headset

How to fix it

Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.

01Fix the room lightingEasy

  1. Turn on enough light to read a book comfortably in the play area; Meta suggests roughly the light you would have in a living room with guests over.
  2. Close the curtains if direct sunlight falls on the play area, and keep the lighting the same each time you play.
  3. If you usually play at night, draw the boundary under your night-time lighting, since day and night light can look like two different rooms.
  4. Never leave the headset where sunlight can shine into the lenses; sunlight through the lenses can permanently damage the displays.

Why it helps: The headset recognizes your room by sight, so big lighting changes make it forget the saved boundary.

02Clean and uncover the tracking camerasEasy

  1. Take the headset off and look at the small cameras on the front and edges of the headset.
  2. Gently wipe them with a dry microfiber cloth; do not use chemical cleaners or alcohol.
  3. Remove any stickers, skins, covers or tape that sit over a camera.
  4. If a smudge will not come off, slightly dampen just the corner of the cloth and keep moisture off the headset.

Why it helps: Dirty or blocked cameras cannot see the room clearly, so the headset cannot match it to your saved boundary.

03Keep the room the same and the play area clearEasy

  1. Avoid moving furniture or wall decor between sessions; if you do, expect to redraw the boundary.
  2. Ask others, including pets, to stay out of the play area while you set up and play.
  3. Remove hazards and obstacles from inside the boundary before you start.
  4. If you use LED strip lights or large mirrors near the play area, try switching off the strips or covering the mirror to see if the boundary holds better.

Why it helps: A room that keeps changing looks new to the headset every time, which triggers a fresh boundary prompt.

04Redraw the boundary the right wayEasy

  1. Press the Meta button on your right controller to open the Navigator, then select Quick controls.
  2. Select Settings, then Environment setup, then Boundary, then Create new boundary.
  3. From there, draw a Roomscale boundary to walk around, or adjust the Stationary boundary if you play sitting or standing in place.
  4. Stand as close as you can to the centre of the play area while drawing a roomscale boundary.
  5. Look around the whole room while you draw, not just in one direction, so the headset learns the space.

Why it helps: Meta says drawing from the centre while looking all around makes the headset much more likely to remember the boundary.

05Correct the floor heightEasy

  1. Open the Navigator with the Meta button, then select Quick controls > Settings > Environment setup > Boundary.
  2. Select Set floor level and follow the on-screen prompts.
  3. Check that the virtual floor now lines up with the real floor before you start playing.

Why it helps: A wrong floor level makes the boundary and games feel too high or too low even when the boundary itself is saved.

06Restart and update the headsetEasy

  1. With the headset on, press and hold the power button until the Power off screen appears, then select Restart.
  2. If the headset is frozen, hold the power button for at least 30 seconds, then wait 30 seconds. If it does not turn back on by itself, press the power button to turn it on.
  3. To check for updates, open the Navigator and select Quick controls > Settings > General > Software update.
  4. Install any update shown, keeping the headset charged and on Wi-Fi.

Why it helps: A restart clears temporary glitches, and updates often include tracking and boundary fixes.

07Clear boundary historyMedium

  1. Open the Navigator with the Meta button, then select Quick controls > Settings > Environment setup > Boundary.
  2. Select Clear Boundary History and confirm.
  3. Note: this removes saved boundaries on the headset and in the cloud for your account, and for every profile on a shared headset. It does not clear scenes or tracking maps.
  4. Draw a new boundary right away, standing in the middle of the room and looking all around.

Why it helps: Meta says clearing boundary history can often fix tracking problems, and it gives the headset a clean start for your boundary.

08Clear physical space historyMedium

  1. Only try this if clearing boundary history did not help.
  2. Open the Navigator, select Library, then Settings.
  3. Select Privacy and safety, then Device Permissions.
  4. Select Clear next to Clear physical space history, then set up your boundary again.

Why it helps: This wipes the stored maps of your rooms so the headset learns your space from scratch.

Check it's fixed

  • Take the headset off, put it back on, and your boundary appears without a prompt to draw a new one.
  • The boundary is still there after a restart.
  • The virtual floor lines up with the real floor when you reach down with a controller.

When to get help

If the boundary still resets in good, steady lighting after a restart, an update and clearing boundary history, contact Meta Quest Support through the Meta Quest Help Center, as a tracking camera may be faulty.

Questions

Why does my Quest boundary reset every time I take the headset off?

Usually the room looks different to the headset than when you drew the boundary, most often because of lighting changes, moved furniture or smudged cameras. Fix the lighting, clean the cameras and redraw from the centre of the room.

Is Guardian the same as Boundary?

Yes. Meta renamed Guardian to Boundary. Settings and help articles now use the name Boundary.

What happens if I clear boundary history?

All saved boundaries are removed from the headset and the cloud for your account, and for every profile on a shared headset. You will need to draw a new boundary, but your games and apps are not affected.

Why does my boundary work in the day but not at night?

Daylight and lamp light can make the same room look like two different spaces to the headset. Keep the lighting similar each time or redraw the boundary under the lighting you play in.
